  General

  • Before beginning any of the work in this class, watch the Plagiarism Video below.  It is easy in online classes to copy and paste information, but it also constitutes plagiarism.  Plagiarism constitutes Academic Dishonesty according to Marian University's policies.  To avoid plagiarism, change both the words and the sentence structures.  A helpful document appears below.
    

    For this class, we will use the following policy for incidences of plagiarism:

    1st Offense in Reading Quizzes - a warning will be given and corrective feedback will be provided
    

    2nd Offense in Reading Quizzes - a warning will be given and corrective feedback will be provided

    Additional Offenses in Reading Quizzes - a zero for the quiz or assignment
    

    Any Offenses in the Papers - a zero for the paper and the incident will be reported to the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

  • Every Day Sociology: Workplaces have their own cultures. This is part of the challenge of starting a new job. One must learn the language and other symbols, norms, values, and beliefs. Observe your workplace and create a post explaining 3 aspects of the culture (language, norms, symbols, etc.) that exist in your workplace.

    Choose one of the following Social Interactions Experiments and post the results:

    1.         People in Wisconsin tend to like their personal space.  Standing too close to a person here will usually initiate some reaction.  Stand too close to three people and describe their reactions.

    2.         Go to a grocery store and say “Hi” to 10 random strangers.  Observe their reactions.

    3.         Gather 4 or 5 friends together.  Go to a public place and stand staring up at the ceiling or a high place on the wall.  See how many people join your group or ask you questions.

    McDonaldization is a common trend in areas of life not related to food. Find an example of non-fast food McDonaldization and write short post (100-150 words) describing the McDonaldization you have observed.

  • Every Day Sociology:
    Cultures change everyday, but some changes are more obvious than others.  Technological Determinism argues that technology is the single biggest driver of social change.  Take a look at a social media site (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) and find an example of how culture (norms, values, language, etc.) is different there than other areas of culture.  If you aren't on any social media sites (good for you, by the way) find examples by looking at news articles that discuss social media.

  • Every Day Sociology: Social Change is often more readily apparent to those who have lived a longer time. Interview someone who is at least 60 years old. Ask them how the world is different from when they were children or teenagers.
